- NBC has learned of Trump's plans to purchase more icebreakers to patrol Canadian waters.
US President Donald Trump has expressed interest in acquiring additional icebreakers to patrol waters off Canada. This was reported on January 18 by NBC TV channel with reference to current and former American officials.
"Trump expressed interest in acquiring more icebreakers to conduct maritime patrols there, which could be one of the new items of spending on security in the Arctic in the defense budget for next year," the officials told the TV channel.
According to NBC, there is concern in the White House about Canada's "vulnerability", and the corresponding costs for ships may be included in the US military budget for 2027. The decision to purchase icebreakers may become part of a strategy to strengthen the US presence in the Arctic.
On February 2, 2025, Trump signed a decree imposing duties on goods from Canada, Mexico and China. This decision, as the American leader explained, was related to his desire to ensure the security of his state. Later, on November 23 of the same year, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a shift in the center of the global economy and progress without the United States. He explained this by saying that if the twentieth century was characterized by a "concentration of power" and capital, then the twenty—first century was characterized by the rise of the countries of the south and the new role of medium-sized states such as Canada.
