Eight NATO countries condemn US threats of tariffs over Greenland
Eight NATO countries have said that US President Donald Trump's threats to impose new duties over Greenland undermine transatlantic relations and could lead to an escalation of tensions. The statement was published on January 18 on the official website of the Swedish government.
The United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, France and Sweden are among those who condemned the actions of the United States.
"We express our full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland. Based on the process that began last week, we are ready to enter into a dialogue based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. We firmly defend these principles. The threat of tariffs undermines transatlantic relations and carries the risk of escalation. We will continue to respond with a united front and in a coordinated manner. We are determined to preserve our sovereignty," the joint statement says.
The document also emphasizes that ensuring security in the Arctic is a common task of NATO, and the Arctic Endurance exercises, coordinated by Denmark, pose no threat to anyone.
On January 17, Trump announced that Washington was imposing duties of 10% with the possibility of increasing up to 25% on a number of European countries due to the situation around Greenland. Starting from February 1, 2026, tariffs will apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland.
