- The lawyer stated that Trump expected to benefit greatly from the annexation of Greenland.
If US President Donald Trump succeeds in annexing Greenland to the United States, he undoubtedly expects to gain prestige for his country and receive great financial benefits from the island in the future. This was stated on January 18 in a comment to Izvestia by Nikolai Topornin, an international lawyer and director of the Center for European Information.
"You know, in my memory, I do not know a single politician who would so openly have plans to expropriate vast foreign territories. They can simply be taken away from another state for no reason," the expert noted.
Topornin added that Trump is well aware of how much benefit the United States will have in the future, based on its technological and financial capabilities, and earn huge amounts of money — billions of dollars on the territory of the northern state.
"Yes, we will have to invest, we will have to invest, but the Americans have no problems with this. And if not today, then in 5, 10, 15 years the island can make a very large profit. And Trump, as a businessman, understands this very well. Therefore, he laid eyes on it and said that now it is his main goal in foreign policy for the next year or two before the end of his mandate," the lawyer noted.
Greenland is a very rich territory in terms of the possession of minerals — we are talking about very large resources, especially rare earth metals.
"I looked at the analytical information, and even different researchers have different data. But it is obvious that we are talking about colossal deposits of natural resources worth hundreds of billions of dollars. <...> Especially for rare earth metals, where there is cobalt, graphite, lithium, beryllium and other very important rare metals. These deposits are very large, and the United States really needs them, given their vector for the development of these modern technologies using artificial intelligence," Toporkov explained.
Political scientist Yuri Svetov, in a conversation with Izvestia on January 18, noted that if President Trump implements the plan to annex Greenland, he will go down in history not only of his country, but of the whole world. Svetov stressed that the main motive is not Trump's personal vanity, but the strategic interests of the United States.
NBC reported on January 14 that the United States could pay up to $700 billion for the purchase of Greenland if the American leader could reach an appropriate deal. Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said on January 13 that the island's residents want to stay with Denmark. Later, he noted that he considered the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States regarding the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable.
