Vitamin D plays a key role in maintaining immunity, bone health, and overall well-being, and its importance increases in winter due to a lack of sunlight. About this "Newspaper.Ru," said Alexander Konkov, Head of the Department of Therapy at ROSBIOTECH University.

"Vitamin D is especially critically needed in children and adolescents. During the growth period, vitamin deficiency affects the formation of the skeleton, teeth, and muscular system," the specialist noted.

According to him, vitamin D deficiency in children can lead to rickets-like symptoms, muscle weakness, and slower physical development. For the elderly, this nutrient is also extremely important, as the skin's ability to synthesize vitamin decreases with age, and bones become more fragile, which increases the risk of osteoporosis, fractures, and falls.

The expert added that vitamin D is necessary for pregnant and lactating women, as it participates in the formation of the fetal bone system and supports the health of the mother. Its deficiency may be associated with pregnancy complications, decreased immune defenses, and developmental disorders of the child.

According to Konkov, special attention should be paid to vitamin D levels in people with chronic diseases, metabolic disorders, obesity and intestinal problems, as these conditions can impair its absorption. For most healthy adults, vitamin D is also important in winter, especially when there is a lack of fatty fish, seafood and fortified foods in the diet, as well as rare exposure to the sun.

The doctor emphasized that in winter it is recommended to include foods rich in vitamin D in the diet, and if necessary, discuss with the doctor the intake of supplements, taking into account the individual dosage.

Anastasia Lebedeva, a nutritionist and associate professor at ROSBIOTECH University, said on January 8 that many Russians take vitamins in winter, but most supplements are not needed with a normal diet and no deficiency. According to her, only certain nutrients with a proven deficiency are really useful.
