The expected further decline in bank deposit yields in 2026 is a direct result of the Bank of Russia's policy and the transformation of the financial sector's operating environment, and the key rate reduction process initiated in 2025 has a direct impact on the terms of deposit products. This was announced on January 18 by an analyst at the Bank's financial marketplace.ru Gayane Zamaleeva.

The abolition of preferential VAT for some banking operations creates additional pressure on banks' profitability. This leads to an increase in their costs, which banks seek to compensate not only through fees, but also by lowering interest rates on deposits. Thus, part of the increased tax burden is actually shifted to depositors, as the expert notes.

It is clarified that for the bank's depositors, this trend entails a partial transformation of behavioral patterns. The deposit ceases to be the main source of maximum profit, returning to its fundamental role — ensuring the safety of capital and maintaining liquidity.

"At the same time, relying only on deposits in 2026 is not becoming very effective," the analyst said in an interview with the Prime agency.

Zamaleeva added that in the current economic situation, there is an increased interest in alternative investment instruments. Among them, bonds stand out, especially government and reliable corporate ones, which offer yields higher than bank deposits and the potential for value growth with a further reduction in interest rates. For conservative investors, this is an attractive option with a comparable level of risk.

It is noted that funds investing in bonds and the money market are also popular due to their flexibility and ability to quickly adapt to changes in monetary policy. Some investors prefer defensive assets such as gold and other precious metals, which have already shown significant growth in 2025 and are projected to continue to rise in price. The expert recommended combining bank deposits to provide liquidity with more profitable instruments for medium-term investments.

Ruslan Spinka, Director of Sales and Customer Service at Fontvielle IC, announced on January 7 that Russians could consider a savings account as a replacement for bank deposits, which allows them to withdraw funds at any time. They are available with almost any amount, whereas deposits often have an entry threshold. For owners of small amounts, he recommended paying attention to short–term deposits for one to two months, which are sometimes offered as part of marketing campaigns and can provide income above expectations.
