The largest sapphire in the world was found in Sri Lanka
The owners of a purple star sapphire weighing 3,563 carats presented the stone in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This was reported on January 17 by the Associated Press (AP), citing sources.
"This is the largest purple star sapphire of its kind," said consultant gemologist Ashan Amarasinghe.
He noted, speaking about the features of this jewel, that the stone has a symmetrical convex shape and six rays. Amarasinghe estimated the value of the stone at $300-400 million.
According to the publication, the stone belongs to a team of people from the Star of Pure Land, who wished to remain anonymous. One of the representatives said that the sapphire was found in 2023 in a quarry near the remote Sri Lankan city of Ratnapura. Two years later, the owners discovered that the stone was special and received confirmation in two laboratories.
On June 20, the website of the Christie's Magnificent Jewels auction house reported that a rare ten-carat diamond once owned by French Queen Marie Antoinette was sold at auction for almost $14 million. According to the description, it is a rare pink—purple diamond of 10.38 carats, cut in the shape of a "kite".
