The announcement by US President Donald Trump on the imposition of duties on imports of goods from eight European countries due to the situation around Greenland came as a surprise. This was announced on January 17 by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen.

"President [Trump's] statement came as a surprise. <...> We and our NATO partners are increasing our activity in conditions of full transparency towards our American allies," he said in a publication on X.
