The approach of the European Union (EU) countries to negotiations with Russia is unconstructive. Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of Southeastern Norway, expressed this opinion on January 17.

Politico reported on January 15 that European efforts to restore direct contacts with Russia had encountered resistance from Britain, reflecting a diplomatic rift among Western countries. According to the publication, there are concerns in Europe that its role in the issue of the Ukrainian settlement may be reduced.

"European leaders are negotiating among themselves about whether they should negotiate with Russia. This is happening after four years of organizing "peace summits" to which Russia is not invited and where issues of peace are not discussed," Dizen wrote on his page on the social network X (ex. Twitter) by attaching a Politico article to the publication.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on January 14 that Germany wants to achieve a balance with Russia as its largest European neighbor. As the Chancellor noted, he has always maintained that "Russia is a European country."

Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and special representative of the President of Russia for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, reacted positively to Merz's statements the next day.
