- Charge d'affaires of Russia urged to preserve the memory of the occupation of Poland by the Nazis
Russia is struggling with the "historical amnesia" of Poland, which has begun to forget about the actions of Nazi troops on its territory. This was stated on January 17 by Andrei Ordash, Charge d'affaires of Russia in Poland, at a commemorative event in honor of the liberation of the country from German occupation.
"We are fighting the historical amnesia of Polish society, which, unfortunately, in recent decades has begun to forget about what happened here 81 years ago. <...> Naturally, we are fighting as best we can. From our side, we try to spread the truthful information as much as possible," he said.
Ordash added that European states declaring freedom of speech deliberately block alternative sources of information that tell about the Nazi occupation of Poland and other countries. The diplomat stressed that Russia will continue to honor the memory of the events of those years, regardless of possible provocations.
"Even if provocations were being prepared, we would have come here anyway. We laid flowers on this day at our memorial cemetery in Warsaw and we will always do so," he said.
According to Ordash, the preservation of historical memory is one of the key tasks, and Russia will actively counteract its distortion.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki on December 3 last year criticized the idea of Prime Minister Donald Tusk to pay compensation to victims of the Nazi occupation from the Polish state budget and called on him to apologize. He added that he does not know of a single case in history when victims "themselves paid for the evil brought by the occupier and the invader." Nevertheless, Navrotsky also appealed to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, urging him to seriously consider the issue of compensation, to which Poland, in his opinion, is entitled.
