Thousands of people rallied in Denmark against the US takeover of Greenland
In Denmark, thousands of protesters took to the streets to protest against US President Donald Trump's plans to annex Greenland, the Daily Express newspaper reported on January 17.
"The demonstration, which took place in Denmark's second largest city of Aarhus, brought together families, activists and residents of Greenland united in opposing [Trump's] proposal," the publication says.
Residents of the city are holding posters with slogans: "Hands off Greenland!" and "Let's get America out of the country!".
Speakers at the rally said that the future of Greenland should be decided by its own people. It is also emphasized that Denmark will never transfer its territory for political purposes.
On January 14, Trump reiterated that US relations with Denmark are "good," but Greenland is necessary for Washington to ensure national security. The head of the government of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, noted that he considers the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States regarding the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable.
