- The Belgian Defense Minister announced the EU's plan "B" in case Greenland is captured
The European Union (EU) has a plan "B" in case the United States decides to militarily seize Greenland. This was announced on January 16 by Belgian Defense Minister Theo Franken.
"We want to make it clear to the Americans that we take their security concerns in the area seriously. And that we can solve the problem ourselves if it arises," HLN quoted him as saying.
Franken stressed that the US military superiority in the region is enormous and confrontation is not an option. At the same time, he expressed the hope that the situation would be resolved without escalation and that the international intelligence mission in Greenland, in which Belgium participates, would quickly bring results.
He called the main task to send a signal to the United States that the EU takes their security concerns in the region seriously and is able to solve problems on its own, although an operation under the auspices of NATO remains an ideal option.
The day before, former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the United States could theoretically leave NATO amid disagreements with European countries. He said that the remaining member states of the alliance should take all possible steps to reduce the risk of Washington's withdrawal from NATO, but at the same time be prepared for such a scenario. According to him, the position of the allies should make it possible to cope with their departure.
On January 14, US President Donald Trump reiterated that US relations with Denmark are "good," but Greenland is necessary for the United States to ensure national security. The head of the government of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, noted that he considers the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States regarding the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on January 16 that Russia considers Greenland to be part of Danish territory. The claims of the American leader Trump to the island make the situation around the acquisition of Greenland "unusual", since this initiative is also "extraordinary from the point of view of international law."
On January 16, Reuters reported that the United States had begun negotiations with NATO on Greenland. It was noted that Greenland is very necessary for the United States to ensure national security after the decision to deploy the Golden Dome missile defense system.
