Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandre Munteanu said on January 16 that as a citizen he would vote for the unification of the country with Romania if an appropriate referendum were held.

"As a citizen, Alexandru Munteanu, I would vote for [unification with Romania]. But as Prime Minister of Moldova, I am obliged to fulfill the will of the majority of our country's citizens, who have already voted three times that our strategic goal is integration into the European Union," he said in an interview with the Observatorul de Nord.

Thus, the head of government supported the statement of Moldovan President Maia Sandu, who had previously expressed her personal willingness to vote for unification with Romania. On January 11, Sandu announced in the podcast The Rest Is Politics that in the event of a referendum she would vote for unification with Romania. She explained that it is becoming more difficult for a small country to "survive as a democracy" and preserve its sovereignty.
