- Scientists have refuted Trump's theory about the connection between paracetamol and the development of autism in children
A cross-section of 43 studies on paracetamol and pregnancy did not reveal evidence of a link between taking paracetamol in pregnant women and the development of autism in children, as previously stated by US President Donald Trump. This was reported by Politico on January 17.
"We did not find a clinically significant increase in the risk of autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or mental retardation in children whose mothers took paracetamol during pregnancy," said Asma Khalil, an obstetrician and gynecologist at St. George's Hospital in London.
Researchers from The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Women's Health say that previous results have shown small associations between paracetamol during pregnancy and an increased risk of autism, but "they were often based on studies prone to bias."
The Lancet stated that they based their discovery on studies with the most rigorous selection and sampling methods, including observations of siblings born to the same mother who took paracetamol only during one of the pregnancies, and take into account common genetic factors.
"Our data show that the previously reported associations are most likely due to a genetic predisposition or other maternal factors such as fever, rather than the direct effect of paracetamol itself," Khalil added.
On September 22, Trump announced that the US Department of Health would inform pregnant women that taking paracetamol during pregnancy increases the risk of developing autism in a child. He personally urged pregnant women to use this drug only if "they are already on the verge of death," and also asked not to give paracetamol to children.
