- The WSJ learned about the return of anti-Syrian sanctions by the United States during the operation against the Kurds
Washington has threatened Damascus with the return of anti-Syrian sanctions in response to the escalation in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region, which is located in the north-east of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR). This was reported on January 16 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing informed sources.
They expressed concern about the possible emergence of a broader confrontation between the parties in the area, which in turn could also be joined by the United States. The newspaper's interlocutors said that representatives of the American military forces arrived in the republic on Friday, January 16, to negotiate with the Syrian side.
"American officials have threatened to re-impose Caesar Act sanctions against the Syrian government if Damascus launches a broader attack (on the Kurds. — Ed.)," the article says.
It also notes that US President Donald Trump's special envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, and the head of the American Central Command, Admiral Brad Cooper, also maintain contacts with both the republic and the Kurds, trying to resolve the conflict.
The SANA news agency reported on the same day that SAR President Ahmed al-Sharaa had signed a decree on the inviolability of the privacy of the representatives of the Kurdish people living in his country. It was clarified that this gesture was a call to this ethnic group to build a common future.
