Every year on January 19, Orthodox believers celebrate Epiphany, or Epiphany, one of the most important church holidays of the year. It was erected in memory of the baptism of Christ in the Jordan River and the subsequent appearance of the Holy Trinity. Traditionally, the Divine Liturgy and the great consecration of water are held on this day. Izvestia is broadcasting a live broadcast of the festive service.

The celebration of the Epiphany begins the day before, on January 18, with an all-night vigil. On the morning of January 19, the Divine Liturgy takes place in the churches, which ends with the Great Water Blessing. This is a special rite of consecration of water, which is performed only twice a year — on the eve of Epiphany, on Epiphany Eve, and directly on the day of the Epiphany of the Lord. During the ceremony, the priest, while reciting a prayer, lowers the cross into the water. If possible, a procession is also conducted from the temple to the nearest ice hole (Jordan), which is consecrated by the same order.

The water consecrated in Baptism is called agiasm (translated from Greek as "holy"). Believers treat it with special reverence — such water is stored throughout the year next to the home iconostasis. It is also customary to drink it on an empty stomach, after reading a prayer.

On the night of January 18-19, many Russians come to the rivers and lakes to plunge into the Jordan. Although this rite is not considered obligatory from the point of view of the church charter, it is popular with believers. Local authorities equip special fonts for bathing. So, 40 such sites will be available in Moscow.
