Anatoly Kalina, director of the Curonian Spit National Park in the Kaliningrad Region, was placed under house arrest for two months in a criminal case of deforestation. This was reported on January 16 by a correspondent of Izvestia.

According to investigators, he, along with an acquaintance and others, organized the felling of trees in a specially protected area of about one hectare. Kalina used his official position to conceal the traces of the crime.

The damage to the territory recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is estimated at over 12.7 million rubles. It is noted that the defendant is charged with committing a crime under Part 3 of Article 260 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Illegal logging of forest plantations").

Earlier that day, the investigation requested a preventive measure in the form of house arrest for the director of the national park. A court hearing to consider the petition was scheduled for the same day.

A source from Izvestia reported on January 14 that Kalina had been detained by representatives of law enforcement agencies. It was noted that the Curonian Spit is a narrow sandy strip of land between the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea.
