In Irkutsk, due to the abnormally cold weather, a high-alert mode began to operate. The city administration announced this on Friday, January 16.

"Our task is to ensure the safety of residents and prevent emergencies at infrastructure facilities. All services are ready to respond if necessary," commented Mayor Ruslan Bolotov.

According to the Irkutsk Hydrometeorological Center, abnormal frosts are expected in the period from January 16 to January 19. The high-alert regime has been announced until the morning of January 21, but it may be extended if necessary, IrkutskMedia news agency clarifies.

The average daily air temperature these days will be 7-15 degrees below the climatic norm. -33...-35 degrees is expected at night on January 17, during the day — from -27 to -29.

Meanwhile, it was reported the day before that abnormal frosts corresponding to the "Epiphany" scenario would hit the entire region. The average daily temperatures will be 8-12 degrees below normal, in some areas — 15 degrees. In particular, on January 19, in the northern and Verkhnelensk districts, the thermometer may drop to -55 degrees.
