A military expert questioned Europe's ability to create an analog of the "Hazel Tree"
A military observer, retired Colonel Viktor Litovkin, expressed the opinion that without hypersonic technologies, statements about the creation of missile systems like the Oreshnik have no real basis and are rather demonstrative.
In an interview with Radio 1 on Friday, January 16, the expert noted that the key element of such systems is precisely the hypersonic speed of the missile, but European countries have not yet demonstrated the presence of such weapons. The expert stressed that even the United States, despite active developments, is only at the initial stage, while the situation in Europe is even more complicated.
Litovkin added that American missiles reach speeds of up to mach six — this is only the boundary level of hypersound, and France, Great Britain, Germany and Italy did not show such indicators. In his opinion, until these countries have comparable technologies, talks about creating systems similar to the "Hazel Tree" remain populist and unsupported by real capabilities.
On January 15, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Europe needs to acquire weapons similar to the Russian Oreshnik missile system. He also pointed out that Russia's launch of a long-range missile was a demonstration of the country's new military capabilities and readiness to use them. He noted that France "is in the range of the Hazel Tree," writes NSN. The President added that the presence of such weapons is necessary to maintain the authority of European states, the website notes. kp.ru .
According to him, by 2027, the country's military spending is planned to increase to 64 billion euros. 360.ru . In addition, the politician said that the European air defense system is superior to the American Patriot complexes.
On January 10, defense analyst Victoria Taylor noted that Oreshnik missiles with a range of up to 5.5 thousand km are capable of reaching most of Europe. According to her, the high flight speed also poses a serious threat, since the higher it is, the less time the air defense systems have to detect and intercept the target, IA Regnum notes.
On January 9, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced a massive strike using an Oreshnik missile against critical targets in Ukraine. In particular, the Lviv State Aviation Repair Plant was disabled, writes RT. According to the agency, this was a response to an attempt by the Ukrainian side to attack the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
