The Armenian Anti-Corruption Court of Appeal has suspended the decision of the court of first instance on the transfer of Russian businessman Samvel Karapetyan to house arrest. This was reported by Sputnik Armenia on January 16.

"Businessman Samvel Karapetyan is being returned to jail from house arrest. The Anti—Corruption Court of Appeal has changed the decision of the lower instance," the media Telegram channel says.

Karapetyan's lawyer Lianna Gasparyan confirmed that the decision to change the preventive measure was indeed suspended, but later, at 16:00 (15:00 Moscow time), the judges should meet again.

"We have another court session, and we'll see what its outcome will be. The issue of preventive measures will be reviewed again," TASS quoted her as saying.

A court in Armenia transferred Karapetyan to house arrest from a pre-trial detention center on December 30, 2025. The judges also decided to set bail for the businessman.

Karapetyan's detention became known on June 18 last year. He was charged with calling for the seizure of power in Armenia, after which he was arrested.

On July 3, the Armenian parliament adopted in the final reading laws allowing the nationalization of the company "Electric Networks of Armenia", which belonged to Karapetyan. The opposition expressed disagreement, considering the process illegal. On July 15, the opposition political parties of the Armenian parliament appealed to the Constitutional Court (CC) demanding that the law on the nationalization of Karapetyan's Electric Grids be declared unconstitutional.

On July 23, Karapetyan defeated the Armenian government in the International Arbitration Court in the case of the nationalization of the "Electric Grids of Armenia", which belonged to him. Later, on November 6, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan linked the order of nationalization of the "Electric Grids of Armenia" with their cost.

Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC) On November 17, Armenia signed a document on revoking the license of the Electric Networks of Armenia Company (ENA), which is owned by Karapetyan. Four out of five members of the commission voted for the relevant decision.
