The defense of General Ivan Popov asked the cassation court to overturn the verdict.

A representative of the defense of the former commander of the 58th Army, Ivan Popov, who is serving a five-year sentence in a Moscow Region penal colony in a case of fraud and forgery, filed a cassation appeal against the verdict. This was announced on January 16 by the convict's lawyer, Sergei Buinovsky.

"In our cassation appeal, we ask to cancel the verdict of the Tambov Garrison Military Court of April 24, 2025 and the appeal ruling of the 2nd Western District Military Court of July 25, 2025 against Popov Ivan Ivanovich. We also ask the cassation instance to send the criminal case for a new hearing to the court of first instance," TASS quoted Buinovsky as saying.

The lawyer also noted that his client "does not lose hope for justice."
