Over the past day, 178 road accidents have occurred on Russian roads, in which 13 people were killed and 244 injured. 10 of the dead were drivers and passengers. This was reported to Izvestia on January 16 by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.
As a result of 57 accidents, 36 of which occurred at pedestrian crossings and 21 outside their area of operation, three pedestrians were killed, and 56 more were injured in various degrees of severity. Among the injured were 11 underage pedestrians, 10 of whom were injured when crossing the roadway in designated places, that is, due to the fault of drivers or their own negligence.
Over the past day, 21 accidents involving minors were registered, in which 27 young road users, including 16 passengers, were injured. There are no dead children. 18 accidents involving buses were recorded, in which one person was killed, 24 more road users, including one child, needed medical help. Five bus accidents were caused by traffic violations committed by drivers of other vehicles.
So, in the Arkhangelsk region, on 8 km of the federal highway "Entrance to the city of Severodvinsk from the M-8 Kholmogory highway, a 30-year-old female crossover driver drove into the oncoming lane, where she collided with an SUV and a school bus carrying six teenagers aged 15-16 and two accompanying adults. They were returning home to Severodvinsk from Arkhangelsk after participating in the regional Biology Olympiad. After the collision, the school bus left the road. As a result of the accident, the female driver and passenger of the crossover, as well as the 60-year-old bus driver and one of the adult passengers accompanying the children were injured in the hospital. Another bus passenger, as well as the driver and passenger of the SUV, received medical assistance, after which they were sent for outpatient treatment.
In addition, temporary restrictions or traffic closures were in effect in some regions of the country due to adverse weather conditions. For example, in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, due to the deterioration of the weather in Georgia, since yesterday evening, restrictions have been imposed on truck traffic on the A-161 highway of federal significance Vladikavkaz - Nizhny Lars — border with the Republic of Georgia in the direction of departure from the Russian Federation.
In the Orenburg region, traffic on seven regional highways has been temporarily suspended for more than two days due to a snowstorm and strong winds. The section of the M-5 Ural highway at the entrance to the Orsk checkpoint from 170 km to 260 km was also blocked. In the Kamchatka Territory, due to adverse weather conditions — snow, blizzard, gusty winds and limited visibility — traffic was stopped on three regional highways.
On the eve of the weekend, when planning long-distance trips, motorists were advised to familiarize themselves with the weather forecast and media information about possible overlap sites, outlining detour routes in advance. In case of traffic restrictions or closure of road sections due to worsening weather, the relevant information is promptly posted on the website of the State Traffic Inspectorate, as well as on the official pages of the service units in social networks.
"The State Traffic Inspectorate draws the attention of drivers to the fact that in winter you should be extremely careful when driving: avoid sudden rash maneuvers and lane changes on roads slippery with snow or ice, observe the interval and distance between vehicles, do not exceed the set speed. If the weather worsens, refrain from using personal vehicles, and in urban conditions, transfer to public transport," said Police Colonel Sergey Hrantskevich, head of the Department for Road Safety Promotion and Prevention of child traffic Injuries at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.
On January 12, the State Traffic Inspectorate reported that during the New Year holidays (from January 1 to January 11, 2026), according to preliminary data, 2,329 car accidents occurred on the country's roads, in which 348 people were killed and 3,515 injured.
