Russian Ambassador to Denmark denies Russia's claims to Greenland
Russia has no claims to Greenland. This was announced on January 16 by Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin.
This is how he commented on the statements of US President Donald Trump, who claimed that if the United States does not take Greenland, Russia or China will allegedly do it.
"Russia does not harbor aggressive plans against its Arctic neighbors, does not threaten them with military action, does not blackmail them, and does not claim to seize their territory," TASS quoted him as saying.
Barbin also recalled the statements of Danish Foreign Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen, who stated that neither Russia nor China pose a threat to Greenland. However, according to Barbin, NATO countries, including Denmark, use the concept of the Russian or Chinese threat to justify the militarization of the Arctic.
The diplomat noted that NATO's involvement in the Arctic promotes confrontational approaches that weaken security and increase military tensions in the region.
On January 14, the White House published a post on X (formerly Twitter) with a picture of Greenland at a crossroads, where the island will have to choose between the United States and Russia and China. At the same time, Trump reiterated that US relations with Denmark are "good," but Greenland is necessary for the United States to ensure national security. A day earlier, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte admitted that there are no Russian or Chinese ships off the coast of Greenland.
At the same time, Greenland's prime minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen noted that he considers the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States towards the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable. On January 11, former French President Francois Hollande expressed the opinion that US military action against Greenland would be the end of NATO. He added that the United States "should not do anything about Greenland, especially by military means."
