- In the USA, they were puzzled by the absence of blacks in the team of the new mayor of New York, Mamdani
On January 15, The New York Times (NYT) drew attention to the absence of blacks among the deputy mayors of New York, Zohran Mamdani.
During his tenure, Mamdani appointed five deputies, among whom there is only one Latin American, but no blacks.
"This has become a problem. Some black and Latino leaders fear that they are being denied access to power under Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and that they may lose the positions they gained under former Mayor Eric Adams," the publication says.
The Guardian newspaper reported on January 1 that 34-year-old Mamdani became the first Muslim mayor in the history of New York, as well as the first mayor of South Asian descent and the youngest head of the city in more than 100 years. It was noted that the oath was taken by the Attorney General of the state of New York, Letitia James.
Mamdani won the New York City elections on November 5. At the same time, Bloomberg reported that this vote was one of a series of major political victories won by the Democratic Party in recent years.
