Dmitry Akimov, a former striker for Zenit and Dynamo St. Petersburg football clubs, has died at the age of 45. This was announced on January 15 by the Dynamo press service.
"Dmitry Akimov passed away. The former Dynamo St. Petersburg striker was 45 years old. We express our sincere condolences to Dmitry's family and friends," the Telegram channel said.
As a member of Dinamo Minsk, he became the bronze medalist of the 2000 Belarusian championship, and with Zenit he won the bronze medals of the 2001 Russian Championship. Akimov ranks third in the list of top scorers in the history of the second-strongest division of the Russian championship, scoring 127 goals.
Since 2004, the player has represented Novosibirsk club Sibir. His outstanding 2007 season was marked by the title of the top scorer of the First Division of the Russian Championship, where he scored 34 goals. Following a vote by representatives of the Professional Football League (PFL) clubs, he was also awarded the title of the best striker in the division.
