A court in Poland has not made a decision on the extradition of archaeologist Alexander Butyagin to Ukraine. This was announced on January 15 by his colleagues in the Telegram channel.

According to their information, the defense requested a postponement of the hearing due to lack of preparation for it, as the prosecution did not provide the necessary documents in translation. The court refused this request, allocating only two hours for review.

After returning from a break, the court was going to proceed to making a decision, but the lawyer challenged the judge, pointing out the systematic restriction of the right to defense.

As noted in the message, the meeting has been postponed until the recusal is considered, which will take about a week. If the request is granted, the case will be transferred to a new judge, if not, the next hearing is expected no earlier than March.

The defense notes that Butyagin's conditions of detention remain harsh: one phone call per week, lack of Internet access, limited visits, difficulties in receiving purchases and transfers, as well as a cell for three and one hour of walking a day. In this case, we are talking about a person who is in custody as a suspect and is not accused of violent crimes.

Butyagin's detention in Poland became known on December 11, 2025. The Ukrainian authorities were looking for him allegedly for illegal archaeological research in Crimea. On January 12, a journalist from Izvestia reported that the Warsaw District Court had decided to extend his arrest after the hearing on Butyagin's case. It is specified that the arrest of the Russian was extended until March 4. The Russian Foreign Ministry pointed out that the accusations from Ukraine are absurd.

On January 15, the Warsaw District Court refused to postpone consideration of the case on the extradition of the Russian archaeologist to the territory of Ukraine. According to the lawyer, Butyagin did not agree with the admission of his extradition to Ukraine because it poses a "threat to life and health." The Russian Embassy in Poland provides any possible assistance to the detainee.
