Throughout the first working day of 2026, viewers and critics discussed the results of the Golden Globes, where Timothy Chalamet won the prize for best actor, beating DiCaprio, Clooney, Hawke and other living legends. His role in "Marty the Magnificent" is called the best in the career of a young star. Now this picture has been released in Russia, you can personally see the skill of Chalamet and director Josh Safdie. The western "Sins of the West" starring Guy Pearce, the comedy thriller "Killer Saturday", the Chinese animated masterpiece "Ocean of Wonders" and the Russian spy action "Enlisted" are also shown. Izvestia advises on what to buy a ticket for this weekend.

"Marty the Magnificent" 18+

Director: Josh Safdie Starring: Timothy Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa Ezion, Kevin O'Leary, Tyler, the Creator, Abel Ferrara

Brothers Benny and Josh Safdie are New York superstars of auteur cinema, their "Uncut Diamonds" in 2019 had the effect of an exploding bomb and remain one of the most high—profile films of the last decade. Apparently, then the brothers decided that two heads were good, but apart it was even better, and released their own films last year. After a break of several years, the intrigue was all the stronger.

Benny's movie came out a little earlier, it's "The Smasher," aka The Smashing Machine, and won the Silver Lion for Best Director in Venice. Josh released "Marty" a few months later, outside of the big festival contests, but Chalamet just won a Golden Globe for it, and he's likely to get an Oscar. And in general, it seems to be the best role in the career of a young star.

This is not just a sports biopic, although the hero is copied from the famous table tennis player Marty Reisman. The era here has remained the same, the 50s carefully recreated, but the protagonist's name is Marty Mauser, he is a genius of sports, but also a completely reckless adventurer who risks everything in the world in order to one day perform at a tournament and show the whole world that he is the best.

Mauser's dizzying scams eventually turn New York into a criminal maelstrom, where more and more people are sucked in, and the stakes are rising with every minute of screen time. Gwyneth Paltrow (the first big role in a long time), rapper Tyler, the Creator, and cult director Abel Ferrara, a legend of New York cinema, perfectly fit in here. "Sins of the West" 18+

Director: Ned Crowley Starring: Guy Pearce, Bill Pullman, Raul Max Trujillo, Jack Olcott, DeVanda Wise

A dark, drawling western with elements of a mystical thriller takes us into the harsh reality of America in the middle of the 19th century, freed as much as possible from the romantic flair of the early representatives of the genre. The plot revolves around a doctor who agrees to accompany a woman and her daughter Faith through the dangerous wastelands of the West. They're going to the healer. The mother believes that she is possessed and brings death to everything she touches. This is how all the imaginable threats of the Wild West are multiplied by mystical forces that act no less ruthlessly here, unless it is just a figment of someone's sick imagination.

The film features a calibrated cast of established (sometimes, however, too long ago) superstars, but at the center here, of course, is the inimitable Guy Pearce. He is currently having a renaissance: "Brutalist" and "Shroud" have recently been released, now this western is, however, a more modest project and without a powerful festival fate, but still not the last in its series. Well, the problem here is the most urgent: I want to find the darkness inside the child, but in fact, adults have such demons here that you can even bear the saints. Both the characters and the viewer will have to deal with all of them here.

"Recruited" 16+

Director: Ivan Arkhipov Starring: Alexander Metelkin, Ivan Okhlobystin, Igor Zizhikin, Nika Zdorik, Alexey Kravchenko

The second season of "Lilies of the Valley" had not had time to be released, and Nika Zdorik was back on the screen, and this time on the big screen. "Enlisted" is a spy thriller that brilliantly parodies low—budget American films of the 80s of the same genre.

There is a handsome, strong special agent who performs dangerous tasks abroad, and he is driven by a desire to get even for his father at all costs. Ivan Okhlobystin plays a curator from the GRU, who assigns this wonderful hero to complete a task on which the fate of Russia depends. The essence of the task is to get through with a supercharge wherever they say, deal with the guards and eliminate the threat to humanity. All this has something to do with the biolab and the new generation of secret weapons.

It is clear that the authors have not only carefully watched a million carbon-copy American action films, but are also so fed up with them that they are happy to juggle cliches, building on this the postmodern humor of their film. And all this is to the music of DJ Groove. It turned out to be very fun, fervent and dynamic, but most importantly — nostalgic. So that we could watch and ask ourselves once again how we could spend so much time on such a movie when it was being passed from hand to hand on VHS with an amateur translation and a shaky picture of the lowest possible quality.

"Murder Saturday" 16+

Director: Luke Greenfield Starring Kevin James, Alan Ritchson, Sarah Chalk, Alan Tudyk, Isla Fisher

If "Enlisted" is a parody made with a poker face, then "Killer Saturday", which also refers to the 80s, does not hesitate to openly and immediately declare that it is a comedy thriller. And the pumped—up Alan Ritchson is a greeting to the "Babysitters", and Schwarzenegger, and Stallone, and many others from the "oldies". This film was released back in the fall on Amazon Prime Video, but the Russian distributor believes in its potential and therefore decided to release it anyway, even two months after the online premiere. It is all the more interesting to see how this will work in Russian conditions, because "Avatar" has also been added to the New Year's domestic hits, there is plenty to choose from.

In the story, an ordinary suburban dad finds himself embroiled in a criminal dispute in the company of his new neighbor. He thought they were just men with sons, but it turned out that the jock's son might not be real, and anyway, it all smacks of "Spy Kids," with the only difference being that our main character is not a tall blond man in a black shoe, but a short brunette in a running shoes. And there will still be a lot of jokes and arguments about who is better at raising children. Because the main thing, as Vin Diesel likes to say in Fast and Furious, is family.

"Ocean of Wonders" 12+

Director: Tian Xiaopeng

The Chinese superhit of 2023 has been online for a long time, of course, but it's coming out in Russia for the first time. And those who see it on the big screen for the first time are lucky. You can guarantee that you haven't seen such a visual feast for a long time (yes, "Avatar", and it concerns you a little too!), everything here is so bright and in such quantity that your eyes may hurt from unaccustomed use. And the technique does not look like either anime or Western animation. It is simultaneously associated with traditional Chinese painting and the most modern 3D technologies. It's probably cooler than Neja.

At the same time, we have a very human story without combat robots and exploding heads. The main character, a girl named Shenxiu, is going through her parents' divorce and the fact that her father is behaving like a stranger. During a sea cruise, she falls overboard and finds herself in a psychedelic underwater world. There she meets an eccentric chef, the owner of the Ocean of Wonders floating restaurant, with whom she now needs to find a magical artifact that will return the girl's mother.
