The Pestel Institute estimates that the housing shortage in Germany has already reached a record high of 1.4 million apartments by the end of 2024. This was announced on January 15 by the Tagesschau television service.

According to the institute's estimates, about 200,000 apartments per year will be built in the country in the near future, which is about half of what the market needs.

According to the Pestel Institute, the housing shortage has become one of the reasons for the slowdown in the German economy. The article notes that the elderly and the younger generation under 25 suffer the most from housing shortages.

The author of the article clarifies that the shortage of housing is most noticeable in two federal states: North Rhine-Westphalia (376 thousand apartments) and Bavaria (233 thousand).

On the same day, the Financial Times (FT) newspaper reported that the German economy in 2025 showed growth for the first time since 2022, but it was only 0.2% amid the country's attempts to recover from prolonged stagnation and economic crisis. The publication said that the German manufacturing sector continued to decline for the third year in a row, and the automotive industry and mechanical engineering were the most affected.

On January 15, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized the attitude of Germans to work and called on the country's residents to work more. He gave an example that Swiss residents work an average of 200 hours longer per year than Germans, while there are no "genetic differences" between the citizens of the countries.
