By the end of 2025, the Russian car market was ranked fifth in the European ranking in terms of sales, losing one position in a year. This was reported on December 15 by the analytical agency Autostat, citing data from the GlobalData consulting company.

Germany still holds the first place in terms of sales of new passenger cars in Europe, with 2.86 million cars sold in the country in 2025, which is 1.4% more year-on-year. The UK retained the second position with an indicator of 2.02 million cars sold (+3.5%). France came third with a score of 1.63 million units (-5%).

Italy came in fourth place, with 1.53 million vehicles sold there over the year (-2.2%). Russia, if taken into account when considering the European car market, dropped to fifth place (1.33 million units; -15.6%). The last European country in which the car market exceeded the mark of 1 million units was Spain (1.15 million units; +12.9%).

As Sergey Tselikov, director of Autostat, previously reported, the Russian car market dropped to 13th place in the world ranking by the end of 2025. In 2024, it was 11th, and now it has lost ground to Italy and Mexico.

China ranks first in the ranking in terms of new car sales in the world with a score of 23.77 million units (+3.9% year-on-year). The United States ranks second (16.3 million units; +2.3%).

Earlier in the day, car dealers expressed the opinion that after the changes related to the recycling fee, the economic model of the car business in Russia is shifting towards localization. Many market players see the need to organize the assembly of machines in the country.
