In the Greenland situation, the inadequacy of Copenhagen's long-standing line of unconditional subordination to Washington is visible to the naked eye. This was announced at a briefing on January 15 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"This very inferiority of Copenhagen's long—standing line of unconditional submission to its senior ally, the United States, is visible and obvious to the naked eye. After all, now, after the recent publication of the US national security strategy, it turned out that part of the territory of the kingdom (Denmark. — Ed.), which is located in the western hemisphere, is enrolled in the sphere of interests of the United States arbitrarily determined by Washington," Zakharova said.

The diplomat noted that the tension around Greenland speaks to the failure of the Western "rules-based world order." She added that all issues around Greenland should be resolved within the framework of international law, taking into account the interests of the island's residents. Zakharova stressed that the growing tension in the Arctic region is a direct consequence of NATO's actions.

On the same day, The Independent newspaper reported that the United Kingdom, at the request of Denmark, sent a representative of its armed forces to Greenland to participate in the preparation of the Arctic Endurance exercises. As noted, the British serviceman will be part of a group of military personnel from other NATO member countries who also arrived on the island ahead of the start of the exercises.

The German newspaper Bild reported on January 15 that the first military personnel from European countries arrived in Greenland amid Trump's statements about the need for the island to join the United States. According to the newspaper, a Hercules military transport plane of the Danish army landed at the airport of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, last night. On board were not only the Danish military, but also representatives of the French army.
