Orthodox Christians celebrate one of the main church holidays, Epiphany, also known as Epiphany, on January 19. This celebration was established in memory of the evangelical event — the baptism of Jesus Christ in the waters of the Jordan River by the prophet John the Baptist. For believers, the day symbolizes spiritual purification, the beginning of the Savior's ministry and the appearance of the Holy Trinity to the world. Especially for the celebration, Izvestia has prepared more than 70 colorful postcards and greetings that can be shared with loved ones on Epiphany.

Happy Epiphany: customs and traditions of the holiday

The history of the holiday goes back to the evangelical events described in all four canonical Gospels. According to the Scriptures, at the age of about thirty, Jesus Christ came to the Jordan River, where the prophet John, later called the Baptist, preached and performed the rite of cleansing ablution.

Although John himself considered himself unworthy to perform the sacrament over the Savior, Jesus insisted, saying that "thus it behooves us to fulfill all righteousness." During the ceremony, a significant event occurred: the heavens were opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on Christ in the form of a dove. At the same time, the voice of God the Father was heard proclaiming Jesus the son of God.

This phenomenon became a revelation of the trinity of God — the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, which gave the holiday its second name — Epiphany. Thus, Christ's baptism marked his acceptance of the mission to save humanity. It was from this event that the ministry of Jesus Christ to people began.

The theme of baptism has become one of the central themes in Orthodox icon painting. The icons traditionally depict the Savior standing in the waters of the Jordan River, with the prophet John the Baptist at His right hand. In the upper part of the composition, the Holy Spirit is depicted in the form of a dove in a ray of light. Angels can often be seen leaning on either side of the central figure, which emphasizes the grandeur of the moment.

The holiday is widely reflected in folk traditions. In Russia, he completed the Christmas Yuletide cycle, which lasted from Christmas to Epiphany and ended on the eve of the holiday, on Epiphany Eve.

According to custom, the night before Epiphany was devoted to fortune-telling. Girls often guessed at their betrothed using various objects: wax, rings, mirrors, and candle shadows. It was believed that this period was the last and most "true" for such rituals, since with dawn any power that helped predict fate disappeared.

Despite the fact that the church has always condemned such rituals, they persisted in popular culture until the 20th century. On Epiphany Eve itself, believers are instructed to observe a strict one—day fast, which prepares them for the great celebration, and eat only soaked wheat grains with honey and dried fruits.

In the evening, the Divine Liturgy is celebrated in churches and directly on the holiday itself on January 19. It is particularly festive, accompanied by a procession and the consecration of water. Through this sacrament, believers not only become involved in the remembered events, but also spiritually partake of the grace bestowed through the baptism of Christ.

The consecrated epiphany water is then carefully stored throughout the year. It is consumed on an empty stomach with prayer, believing in its ability to strengthen spiritual and bodily strength. Believers also sprinkle it on their homes, cars, and personal belongings, asking for God's blessing and protection for themselves and their loved ones for the coming year.

Another tradition of the holiday is bathing in the ice hole (Jordan), which is often cut down in the shape of a cross. This ceremony symbolizes the baptism of Christ, who entered the waters of the Jordan. In the old days, it was believed that bathing in icy water washed away sins and brought health. However, the church does not prescribe bathing as an obligatory ritual and reminds that the main thing is prayer and participation in worship.

You can congratulate your loved ones on a bright holiday with warm words and postcards. Traditional postcard themes have their origins in iconography and folk customs. The classic image is the biblical scene of Christ's baptism. Images of consecration of water, bathing in an ice hole and winter landscapes with temples are also popular.

You can send a greeting card on social networks or messengers Max, Telegram, Viber or WhatsApp (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in Russia), adding warm wishes to it.
