Anatoly Kalina, director of the Curonian Spit National Park in the Kaliningrad Region, was detained by representatives of law enforcement agencies, a source told Izvestia on January 14.

The Curonian Spit is a narrow sandy strip of land between the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Its length from the Kaliningrad Peninsula to the Lithuanian Klaipeda is 98 km (the Russian part is 48 km), its width ranges from 400 m to 3.8 km. The dunes of Kos are one of the highest in Europe (up to 60 m). Up to half a million tourists visit the national park every year.
