Political scientist Kortunov called the return of American hegemony in the world impossible.

The return of the US global hegemony of the model of the middle or the end of the 20th century is an unrealistic scenario. This opinion was expressed on January 14 by political scientist Andrey Kortunov during a round table on US policy in 2026 at the Russia Today press center.

"The United States, for all its achievements, is less than a quarter of global GDP at face value, and at purchasing power parity it is about 15%. And, of course, this means that the restoration of American hegemony is impossible," the expert said.

According to Kortunov, the world turned out to be unprepared for the tough and active foreign policy of the administration of US President Donald Trump, which caused confusion among many partners and opponents of the United States. However, this does not change the objective process of changing the balance of power in a world where the share of countries in the Global South is increasing.

The political scientist believes that the new world order will not be multipolar in the classical sense, but polycentric, where not only major powers, but also regional leaders, as well as medium and small states that insist on their subjectivity, will play an active role.

He noted that such associations as BRICS and SCO are only taking the first steps, but the processes of decentralization of the global system have objective prerequisites and will continue.

Earlier, on December 22 last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the CIS countries advocate the formation of a new multipolar world order with the coordinating role of the United Nations.
