Forests in the east of the Perm Region are threatened with death due to winds
Vast forests in the north-east of the Perm Region may die due to windstorms. These conclusions were reached by scientists from Perm University (PSNIU).
The thing is that overgrown spruce-fir forests occupy a large area in this territory. In the past, the wind has repeatedly knocked down trees and uprooted them from the soil. This happened in 1975, 1993 and 2015. There are no measures to counter this phenomenon yet.
Wind turbines have been studied at the university for more than 10 years. To assess the risk of windfall, various factors are taken into account — from the frequency and intensity of strong winds, squalls and tornadoes to the characteristics of the forests themselves and their growing conditions.
The university's Geography department has developed special windfall risk maps. They will help forestry specialists and can be used in the creation and updating of regional climate safety data sheets.
According to the <url> news agency, using maps it is also possible to detail risk assessments for individual territories. This may be of interest to large tenants of forest plantations.
Earlier, Izvestia wrote that roads in Russian forests would be divided according to their purpose and right-of-way lanes and road signs would be installed. Experts and environmentalists believe that they will make forests more accessible, but warn of possible abuses in the creation of such roads.
