In the maternity hospital No. 1 in Novokuznetsk, where nine babies died during the New Year holidays, in 2020, Svetlana Khlestunova's child died, but they refused to show it to the woman. She told Izvestia about this on January 14.

According to Khlestunova, she and her husband had been expecting a child for 13 years. In the eighth month of pregnancy, she fell ill and was admitted to the hospital. It was only through a blood test that she later learned of her critical condition.

"They gave me a bunch of papers to sign. I do not know, I do not even know in what condition, I do not remember what I signed. And then the operation," the woman said.

The victim explained that the medical intervention ended with a caesarean section, then she ended up in intensive care. According to Khlestunova, she was denied a sedative, and her husband had to bring Zelenka to the hospital.

"After being transferred from the intensive care unit, they were discharged from the hospital the next day, because they allegedly needed to treat the hospital. For some reason, they refused to transfer to some other maternity hospital," she said.

The woman in labor stressed that no one had seen the child after his death, and the investigation had not come to anything in five years. Moreover, last year the family learned that the newborn was buried in a mass grave.

Another injured woman in labor, Suzanna Poloukhina, told about a planned caesarean section at the 41st week in the second maternity hospital of the same hospital. According to her, at first the operation was successful, it was performed by the head of the department.

"But after that, hell broke loose. I was refused a meeting with the child. I asked them to bring it so that I could put it to my chest after the operation...> [The hospital staff] boorishly told them not to ask for a baby," Poloukhina said.

According to her, in the evening, when the woman was shown her son for the second time, she found a burn on her ear and demanded an explanation from the doctor. She, in turn, replied that this was supposedly a feature of the child.

Obstetric hospital No. 1 of the G.P. Kurbatov City Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Novokuznetsk temporarily stopped receiving patients due to an increased incidence of respiratory infection. Subsequently, it became known about the death of nine babies in the hospital during the New Year holidays.

On January 13, the Investigative Committee of Russia confirmed the death of newborns, and a criminal case was opened in accordance with Part 3 of Article 109 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, Part 3 of Article 293 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The governor of Kuzbass, Ilya Seredyuk, temporarily dismissed the chief physician of the Novokuznetsk maternity hospital. Seredyuk announced that the perinatal centers of the Kemerovo region will be checked for readiness for difficult cases after the incident.

Later, the chief physician and the head of the intensive care unit were detained in Novokuznetsk after the deaths of the infants. They are suspected of committing crimes under Part 3 of Article 293 of the Criminal Code ("Negligence") and Part 3 of Article 109 of the Criminal Code ("Causing death by negligence to two or more persons due to improper performance of professional duties").
