The cause of death of four newborns in Novokuznetsk maternity hospital No. 1 was a neonatal infection that develops in the first days and weeks after birth. The full list of diagnoses of deceased children is published by Izvestia on January 13.
"Neonatal and intrauterine infections, as well as severe complications, including respiratory failure, were detected in most infants," the medical reports say.
According to the documents, the children were diagnosed with pneumonia and respiratory distress syndrome, a form of acute respiratory failure. Six of the nine babies mentioned in the materials were premature: the gestation period ranged from 24 to 34 weeks.
Multiple organ failure syndrome and severe complications such as pneumothorax, hemothorax and infectious and toxic shock are also listed as causes of death.
Thus, a boy born on December 27, 2025, and who died on January 4, 2026, was diagnosed with a generalized infectious process with the development of multiple organ failure syndrome and DIC syndrome, leading to impaired blood clotting. Another child, born prematurely at the 24th week of pregnancy, died from a neonatal infection and respiratory distress syndrome. A baby born at the 26th week of gestation was also among the dead.
Obstetric hospital No. 1 of the G.P. Kurbatov City Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Novokuznetsk temporarily stopped receiving patients on January 13 due to an excess incidence of respiratory infection. Later it became known about the death of nine babies in the hospital during the New Year holidays. The UK confirmed the death of newborns. According to the Izvestia source, all infants were diagnosed with either an intrauterine or neonatal infection, which caused critical complications.
A criminal case has been opened in accordance with Part 3 of Article 109 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Causing death by negligence"), part 3 of Article 293 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Negligence"). The governor of Kuzbass, Ilya Seredyuk, temporarily dismissed the chief physician of the Novokuznetsk maternity hospital. Rospotrebnadzor sent its specialists to maternity hospital No. 1 for an epidemiological examination.
The press service of the Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Kemerovo region reported that in September 2025, the investigation had already initiated a criminal case on causing serious harm to the mother's health after reports of an unsuccessful birth at an early stage in Novokuznetsk maternity hospital No. 1.
