On January 13, US President Donald Trump called on protesters in Iran to seize government offices in the republic.

"Iranian patriots, keep protesting — seize your institutions!! Save the names of the murderers and abusers. They will pay a high price," he wrote on his page on the Truth Social network.

He added that he had canceled all contacts with Iranian officials and promised that assistance to the protesters was "on the way."
