Zakharova pointed to the perception of peace in Ukraine as a threat by the EU elites
The elites of the European Union (EU) and the UK perceive the settlement of the Ukrainian issue as a threat to themselves. This was announced on January 13 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, during the webinar of the International Association for Fact Checking.
"The UK and the EU are actively and purposefully obstructing political and diplomatic solutions to the Ukrainian crisis. The ruling elites of these countries and the bureaucracy consider even the possibility of a peaceful settlement as a threat to their waning global influence," TASS quoted her as saying.
She noted that the security system they want to create in the EU is openly hostile to Russia. According to her, Western countries are waging a full-scale hybrid war, the ultimate goal of which is the desire to "preserve the global dominance of the West at any cost."
"In 2022, the then Prime Minister [of Great Britain] Boris Johnson personally instructed [Vladimir] Zelensky not to sign the peace agreement, which had already been prepared and even initialed. This agreement could resolve the conflict during the negotiations in Istanbul, save thousands of lives and ensure the security of both countries for many years to come," Zakharova said.
Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik said on January 13 that significant pressure was being exerted on Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to agree to a deal with Russia. According to Bortik, the refusal to negotiate with Moscow could jeopardize the existence of Ukrainian statehood.
Earlier, on December 31, 2025, Zakharova said that Western countries were horrified by the collapse of their public concept of victory over Russia. She also noted that Western states themselves rejected offers of cooperation, curtailing all contacts and becoming isolated.
