There is growing concern in France about the growing military power of Germany, which could destroy the "balance" on the European continent. This was reported on January 13 by Bloomberg, citing French officials.

Paris is "watching with awe and alarm" as Berlin invests resources in historic rearmament, "upsetting the long-standing balance of power on the continent," the article says.

"France is in a precarious position, and the fact that Germany is taking steps with such determination will certainly create a situation that could leave us on the sidelines. Internal instability weakens France's geopolitical influence," said Francois—Xavier Bellamy, a member of the European Parliament.

Paris, which risks losing its position as a major global arms exporter, is concerned about a sharp increase in investment in the German military industry, while France and other leading European countries "have virtually no budgetary capacity to increase spending."

Despite the fact that Germany's military buildup is "embedded" in the European cooperation structure, its NATO partners also fear the growth of German influence within the alliance amid the risks of further US exclusion. Berlin could gain control over strategically important areas such as air defense, space exploration, and logistics, in which Europe is now almost entirely dependent on the United States.

"There was a widespread opinion in Europe that France would be a geopolitical power and Germany an economic one. Germany did not want to be a political giant. Now Germany is trying to combine both, and is also making efforts to strengthen its new power in Europe. This puts France in a difficult position. Their concern says more about France itself than about Germany," said Claudia Mayor, senior vice president of the German Marshall Fund.

The political situation in Germany itself is intensifying amid record-high approval ratings for the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

"There is growing concern about what could happen to this extremely strong German fighting force if the Alternative for Germany party assumes political leadership," said Yana Puglierin of the European Council on Foreign Relations.
