The United States wants to acquire Greenland, otherwise Russia or China may allegedly establish control over it. This was announced on January 12 by White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt.

"In my opinion, the President [of the United States Donald Trump] made himself very clear last night. He stated that he would like the United States to acquire Greenland, because he believes that otherwise it could eventually be acquired or even possibly taken over by China or Russia," Leavitt said.

According to her, Greenland's annexation to the United States may be "part of the interests" of the island's residents themselves.

Earlier that day, Republican Congressman from the United States Randy Fine introduced a bill "on the annexation and statehood of Greenland." It clarifies that the law on the annexation and status of Greenland as a state gives Trump the authority to take all necessary actions to annex or acquire Greenland as a territory of the United States. In addition, the legislation obliges Congress to submit a detailed report on the required changes in federal legislation for the final incorporation of Greenland into the United States as a state.

The day before, Trump said that Washington would "one way or another" take control of Greenland. According to him, if the United States does not do this, Russia or China will take the island.

On January 4, the head of the White House said that it would be beneficial for the European Union from the point of view of defense if the United States owned Greenland. The island's head of government, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, indicated on the same day that he considered Washington's "repetitive rhetoric" disrespectful and unacceptable. At the same time, on January 9, the American leader noted that NATO would not exist if he were not president.

European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius said on January 12 that the US military operation to capture Greenland, if launched, would mean the end for the North Atlantic Alliance.
