Decreased motivation and fatigue after the New Year holidays are associated with a sudden change in sleep patterns, nutrition and stress on the nervous system, rather than laziness or weakness of character. Clinical psychologist Ksenia Savelyeva told Izvestia about this.

According to the expert, the post—holiday recession is a natural reaction of the body and psyche to get out of the usual rest regime.

"The post—holiday recession is not a weakness of character, but a reaction of the body and psyche to sudden changes in circumstances and habitual lifestyle," Savelieva explained.

The expert noted that during the holidays, circadian rhythms are disrupted, the production of sleep and wakefulness hormones changes, and the brain adapts to easier enjoyment.

"During the holidays, dopamine is released more easily in response to relaxation and pleasure. Work activity requires a different motivation mechanism, and the brain resists this change," said the psychologist.

The psychological factor also creates an additional burden. After the holidays, a person is forced to switch abruptly from a state of rest to a state of discipline and control, which requires significant mental resources.

"This transition overloads the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for planning and self—control, especially as the body recovers from holiday excesses," she added.

Savelieva stressed that adaptation to the work schedule takes time and takes place in stages.

"The basic adaptation period lasts from three to seven days, and the full restoration of motivation can take up to two to three weeks," she added.

According to the expert, trying to work at the maximum immediately after the holidays only increases fatigue, while a smooth return to the load helps reduce the risk of exhaustion and burnout.
