Retired colonel and military expert Anatoly Matviychuk expressed the opinion that it would be problematic for the European Union (EU) to create a single 100,000-strong army.

In conversation with Lenta.Ru On Monday, January 12, he noted that with significant financial and economic potential, Europe is experiencing serious problems in the military sphere. In his opinion, EU countries are capable of producing weapons and equipment, but they face a shortage of personnel, especially infantry, because over the years of pacifism and reliance on the protection of the United States, they have lost their military readiness.

Matviychuk doubted that Europe would be able to easily recruit about 100,000 troops. He believes that in order to fill the shortage, the EU country will probably have to attract immigrants from other regions, by analogy with the practice of the United States, since, according to the expert, modern Europeans are not ready to serve in the army.

A day earlier, the European Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrius Kubilius, announced the need to form the EU's own armed forces of at least 100,000 people. In his opinion, the troops should replace the US contingent that Washington intends to withdraw from Europe.

In February last year, military expert Alexei Leonkov, in an interview with Izvestia, expressed the opinion that the idea that the European Union (EU) would create its own army without the participation of the United States has been heard for many years, but so far it has not led to anything. In addition, such a scenario is unacceptable for Washington, which benefits from controlling European countries through NATO.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
