The US military operation to capture Greenland, if it begins, will mean the end for the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO). This was announced on January 12 by European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrews Kubilius on the sidelines of a security conference in Sweden.

"I agree with the Danish Prime Minister [Mette Frederiksen] that this is (the capture of Greenland. - Ed.) will be the end of NATO, but it will also have very, very negative consequences among people," the Reuters news agency quoted him as saying.

In addition, Article 42.7 of the Treaty on the European Union obliges member States to provide assistance to Denmark in the event of military aggression from any country.

"It will largely depend on Denmark, how it reacts, what its position will be, but of course, there is an obligation for member states to provide mutual assistance if another member state is facing aggression," Kubilius added.

Brussels is striving to maintain good relations with Washington and not offend Copenhagen.

On January 4, US President Donald Trump said that it would be beneficial for the European Union (EU) from the point of view of defense if the United States owned Greenland. The head of the government of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, indicated on the same day that he considered the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States regarding the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable. At the same time, on January 9, the American leader noted that NATO would not exist if he were not the president of the United States.

Former French President Francois Hollande also noted on January 11 that US military action against Greenland would be the end of NATO. He added that the United States "should not do anything about Greenland, especially by military means."
