The political scientist called Europe's plans to send troops to Greenland unfeasible.
Plans by Britain and France to send a ground contingent to Greenland amid statements by US President Donald Trump about a possible purchase of the island are populist and unworkable rhetoric. This was announced on January 12 by Dmitry Drobnitsky, an American political scientist.
"Everyone understands perfectly well what to send there (to Greenland. — Ed.) There's just nothing. In order to send troops there, relatively speaking, and somehow supply them, it is clear that you need to have a very serious naval component," the expert said.
The expert believes that "there will be no fight for Greenland," and the European powers can only send a symbolic contingent to film the situation on camera.
According to Drobnitsky, London and Paris fear that Trump will be able to implement the plan to buy the island through negotiations with Denmark and the local government, so their actions are aimed at delaying the process in the hope that the American president will be distracted by other issues.
"The Danish government must mature before this (purchase of Greenland. — Ed.). A certain kind of work is required with the Greenlandic self-government. <...> All these are, in fact, solvable issues," the political scientist believes
On January 11, former French President Francois Hollande expressed the opinion that US military action against Greenland would be the end of NATO. He added that the United States "should not do anything about Greenland, especially by military means."
On January 4, Trump said that it would be beneficial for the European Union (EU) from a defense point of view if the United States owned Greenland. However, at the same time, the head of the government of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, noted that he considered the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States regarding the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable.
