The European Union (EU) will inevitably have to negotiate with Russia. This was stated on December 12 by the head of the press service of the European Commission (EC) Paula Pinho during a briefing in Brussels.

"Of course, at some point we will have to negotiate with President [of Russia Vladimir] Putin," Pinho said, broadcast on the EU website.

She noted that the EC is currently working on this, however, according to her, Putin is allegedly not ready for discussions with the EU on a settlement in Ukraine.

On January 9, Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni, during her speech, pointed out the need for EU countries to resume dialogue with Russia. She stated that this opinion is shared by both her Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and French President Emmanuel Macron.

On January 10, Armando Mema, a member of the Finnish national conservative Freedom Alliance party, called Meloni's call for dialogue with Russia important for the whole world. He called for Meloni to be given a leading role in restoring relations with Russia, and also called the statement by the current head of the European diplomacy, Kai Kallas, about the need for European countries to rearm "shocking".
