Former Georgian Prime Minister Garibashvili pleads guilty to money laundering

Former Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, accused of legalizing illegal income, has pleaded guilty. This was announced on January 12 on the website of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic.

"The Georgian Prosecutor's Office has signed a plea agreement with the accused Irakli Garibashvili, according to which the former prime Minister was sentenced to five years in prison for a crime under Part 3 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Georgia," the publication says.

It is noted that Garibashvili was fined 1 million lari (about $370 thousand) as an additional punishment. In addition, he will be deprived of the money received as a result of criminal activity and seized during the search of his house in favor of the state, the department added.

Earlier, on October 24, 2025, the Prosecutor General's Office of Georgia formally charged Garibashvili with laundering criminal proceeds on an especially large scale. According to the prosecutor's office, he was actively engaged in business activities and concealed illegal income by providing false information about large gifts from a family member in the declarations. It was noted that during the search of his apartment, $6.5 million was found.
