In the Kola Arctic, students of some schools stayed at home for distance learning on the first day of school after the New Year holidays. The reason is severe frosts.

In some places in the Murmansk region, a cooling of up to -41 degrees was recorded, representatives of the regional department for hydrometeorology and environmental monitoring said. On January 10-12, frosts of up to -36...-39 degrees were recorded in the west of the region. From the beginning of the year to January 11, the average air temperature was below the climatic norm by 6-12 degrees, and in the west of the region in places — by 13-17 degrees.

Bi-port news agency, referring to the operational headquarters of the Murmansk region, explains that in case of bad weather, parents of schoolchildren themselves determine whether their child can go to school. If not, they should inform the homeroom teacher.

However, lessons must be conducted regardless of the number of children who come to school. The decision to cancel classes or transfer lessons to a remote mode is made by the administration of the educational institution.

In Murmansk, students from schools No. 3, No. 31 and No. 58, elementary school students from gymnasium No. 1, students from grades 1 to 6 of the Murmansk Academic Lyceum, and students from gymnasiums No. 5 and No. 9 were transferred to remote training.

In the Pechenga district, students of school No. 5 in Pechenga and school No. 7 in Korzunovo, students of grades 1-4 of school No. 11 Rayakoski and No. 23 Liinahamari stayed at home.

Earlier, on January 12, it was reported that a new cyclone was already moving towards the Center of Russia, which was affected by heavy snowfall on January 9. At the beginning of next week, it will begin to affect the southern regions of the country — the Crimea, the lower reaches of the Don, the Kuban and the Caucasus.
