- Turkey reports on the risk of a new wave of migration crisis in the event of Iran's collapse
In the event of an escalation of the situation in Iran and the subsequent collapse of the state system, Turkey may face a destabilization of the situation on the border and an uncontrolled flow of refugees. This was reported on January 12 by the Turkiye newspaper.
"For Turkey, the collapse of Iran is not an abstract foreign policy issue. A weak Iran poses a serious threat to the security of our borders; this means armed movement, smuggling and uncontrolled territories," the publication says.
It is noted that the wave of refugees caused by this will become the third stage of the migration crisis, along with the situation after the events in Iraq and Syria. In addition, there is a risk of foreign forces intervening in the region amid instability in the Islamic Republic.
"Any vacuum in Iran will be filled by other powers. The territory surrounding Turkey will turn into a ring of fire. Let's be honest: if Iran collapses, Turkey will pay for it on the ground," the newspaper reports.
The Reuters news agency reported on January 12 that the death toll from protests in Iran had risen to 538, including 490 protesters and 48 security personnel. At the same time, more than 10.6 thousand people were arrested.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said on January 9 that the Iranian youth and the entire nation must maintain unity, which will allow them to defeat any enemy. After that, Iran's Supreme National Security Council accused the United States and Israel of organizing unrest in the country.
