More than 30 million fraud calls were received by Russians during the holidays
Phone scammers made more than 30 million calls to Russians during the January holidays. The record holder for the number of calls received was a resident of Tomsk, who was called more than 2.5 thousand times by scammers. This became known on January 12.
"From December 31 to January 11, fraudsters made more than 30 million calls, each of which was blocked by the service. The most massive attack occurred on a resident of Tomsk — a man received 2,534 calls, mostly in the first half of the day," said analysts of the MTS Defender service for RIA Novosti.
Experts clarified that the average duration of conversations was 11 seconds, and the peak of activity occurred on January 5th and 6th. The bulk of the calls were received in large cities — Moscow, Krasnodar and St. Petersburg, most often women aged 35-44 were affected. The most popular topic of fraudsters were "investment offers" and imitation of calls from government agencies or telecom operators.
Earlier, on January 3, it was reported that Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin instructed to strengthen the responsibility of telecom operators and droppers for violations and expand measures to combat cyberbullying. It is planned to intensify data exchange between banks, digital platforms and departments through the Antifraud system, as well as to introduce joint liability of operators and credit organizations for damage to citizens. The deadline for completing the orders is set until April 10, 2026.
