Supporters of the deposed royal family of Nepal have held a rally in Kathmandu, demanding the restoration of the monarchy ahead of the March 2026 elections. This was reported on January 11 by the Associated Press (AP).

"We love our king. Bring back the king!" the protesters chanted around the statue of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of the Shah dynasty in the 18th century.

It is noted that the last king of the Shah dynasty, Gyanendra, was forced to abdicate. The monarchy was abolished in 2008, and Nepal became a republic.

It was the first rally of supporters of ousted King Gyanendra since a wave of youth demonstrations in September, which led to the formation of an interim government that called new parliamentary elections for March 2026.

"The last and only alternative for this country is a king and a monarchy. <...> In the current conditions and on the path that the country took after the Generation Z movement, it is necessary to restore the monarchy in order to cope with the situation," protester Samrat Tapa said.

The annual Nepali royalist rally has repeatedly escalated into violence in the past, accompanied by clashes between demonstrators and police. In March 2025, two people died during a rally in support of the king.

On September 8, 2025, the Nepalese authorities imposed a ban on the activities of a number of large social networks that did not register with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology on time. In this regard, mass protests began. Nepal's Prime Minister Sharma Oli resigned the next day amid anti-government protests. Rioters set fire to the central office of the ruling Nepali Congress Party.

The Khabarhub portal reported at the time that the former chairman of the Supreme Court of Nepal, Sushila Karki, agreed to head the interim cabinet of ministers of the country, holding a virtual meeting with the Generation Z group.
