In order to create more durable and convenient banknotes, as well as complicate the creation of counterfeits, countries around the world are changing their approach to the traditional type of paper money. Thus, non-standard banknotes and "chameleon money" appear regularly.

So, in 1988, the first polymer banknote was introduced in Australia. The reason for this was the widespread use of counterfeit banknotes due to the development of photocopying technology in the 70s and 80s.

"Other countries have adopted the Australian experience. In 2016, the United Kingdom issued the first polymer banknote with a face value of 5 pounds with the image of Winston Churchill. The country's regulator noted that such banknotes last 2.5 times longer than cotton ones. In addition, they are protected by holograms, more resistant to moisture and pollution," RIA Novosti notes.

Subsequently, polymer money technology began to be used to issue banknotes illustrating memorable events for the state. In Mexico, the victory in the struggle for independence from Spain was marked in this way, and in China, the release of such money was timed to coincide with the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
